Artisan is another word for a craftsman, or someone in a skilled trade who makes things by hand.
Artisans could be:
Carpenters (made furniture)
Jewelers (made jewelry)
Painters (portrayed scenes of everyday life)
Weavers (women could be weavers!) (wove fabric and made clothing)
These ancient Egyptians were highly skilled, but had little social status despite their skills and hard work. All of the art and furniture we see today was created by these hard workers of the ancient world.
The most skilled were the stone carvers who created the statues, engravings, and reliefs of the temples, tombs, and monuments.
From the Discovery Channel
This video talks about an ancient Egyptian town that was discovered, and shows what they found when they excavated the site.
Before you watch, think about the process of discovering an ancient civilization and figuring out how they lived and what they believed by using the clues of artifacts and paintings they left behind.
Think about the last comment of the video clip: "But the paintings on the walls reveal how the villagers wanted to be seen, not how they actually were." Discuss your reactions.
